Head opens school playpark after MND diagnosis

In Stockton, a headteacher whose ankle injury turned out to be motor neurone disease (MND), has fulfilled a dream to open an £89,000 playground at her former school, Hartburn Primary School.
Claire Park had to retire from Hartburn Primary School in Stockton after being diagnosed with MND in January 2025. The condition causes muscle weakness. Her husband Matthew likened the disease to a game of "whack-a-mole", with new health challenges appearing daily. Despite the challenges, the family remained positive.
Former colleagues, friends, and businesses raised over £100,000 to fund the playground refurbishment and support the MND Association. Claire had been headteacher at the school since 2020 and expressed a vision for a special play area for children. Speaking via AI using old recordings of her voice, she said she wanted this space for years. "I cared deeply about this vision, and seeing it become a reality is especially special to me."
The playground includes a shed, flower beds, climbing frames, and astroturf, and is named Mrs Park's Park. Jill Ellison, the school's chair of governors, called it a "dream come true".
Matthew Park described MND as a "very difficult" disease, with new symptoms appearing daily. He noted it is no longer considered rare, as many people are affected.
